ARTIST STATEMENT

I believe that the artistry of dance is rooted in the practice of storytelling. It is an ongoing investigation of humanity and how we as human beings relay our shared experiences. As our lives become more heavily mediated by various technologies, art, which focuses attention back to how we live within our bodies, becomes even more essential.
In kinetic terms, I am curious about opposition and collision, the way in which bodies interact with time and space, and the play of rhythm that is a constant result. I explore a consciously wide range of movement and focus on the layering of that range, as well as the interplay of different dimensions, particularly in the realms of different modes of moving and the way time is felt.
My choreographies often come from a deep need to explore humanity, intimately within myself, as well as communally. Through finding some preliminary answers, I develop root concepts, and discover more questions and unknowns. With my collaborators, the process of generating a piece becomes a kind of communal archeology, each of us looking for information that can lead us to a world we can commit to. It is the culmination of all our perceptions and beliefs that continuously reignite the investigations and clarify our rooted concepts.
Although I have a strong sense of direction in the search of movement, its shape develops through a continual conversation between myself and the dancers- embracing harmony and dissonance, in pursuit of agency.

Taylor Randolph Choreography is known for its athletic and visceral movements that transform mundane moments into dynamic sequences. The choreography engages the audience and encourages them to interact with the work, looking introspectively to determine their relation to the work's ethos. The choreography is intended to reflect the extraordinary reality of the human experience.
